The Local Organizing Committee was delighted to invite interested industry organizations and individuals to attend the 7th International Conference on Managing Pavement Assets in Calgary from June 24 to 28, 2008. This exciting event was held in the magnificent Westin Hotel in downtown Calgary. The theme of the Conference, "Preserving What we Have… Investing in the Future… Finding the Balance", reflected on the pressures on the Civil Engineering profession to develop infrastructure solutions that are sustainable.
Calgary was uniquely suited as the host for the 7th International Conference. In addition to offering world-class meeting and convention facilities, Calgary and the surrounding area offer numerous opportunities for sightseeing and recreation. Banff and the Rocky Mountains are one hour to the west - with unmatched opportunities for hiking, and biking. The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology in Drumheller is 90 minutes to the northeast of Calgary, in the barren valley of the Red Deer River. To the south are the World Heritage site of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and other early Canadian historical sites. For the golfers, there are a number of spectacular golf courses within a one-hour drive of Calgary.
A varied presentation format was designed to encourage participation from industry. Distinguished keynote speakers, a large industrial exhibition, and several practical workshops and short courses were highlighted. As well, there were technical tours to local sites of unique interest. As the conference was held just prior to the beginning of the world famous Calgary Exhibition and Stampede “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”, attendees were encouraged to combine their visit to Calgary with a long weekend in the Canadian Rockies and possibly even late spring skiing? We looked forward to greeting the attendees in Calgary June 24 to 28th, 2008, and were extremely pleased to have participants from 26 countries - at a very successful conference!
